Alcohol Protection – Tetrahydropyranylation: A mixture of alcohol, dihydropyran and Phos-Cat1 was stirred in ether. Following work-up, the tetrahydropyran derivative was isolated cleanly and in >98% yield.
Carbonyl Protection – Ketalisation: A mixture of ketone, ethylene glycol and Phos-Cat1 in toluene was refluxed under Dean and Stark. Following work-up the 1,3-dioxolane product was obtained in high purity and in >98% yield.
